From Friends to Followers: A conceptual work about the loss of the human internet.
On the web, we all sat in a field in a circle. Nowadays, it feels like we are being looked at on a stage, needing to perform and conform while we constantly feel eyes on us, judging. Everything moves quickly, and the pressure to present a perfect image of ourselves is greater than ever. Under that pressure, your authentic self can get lost.
I miss the times when nobody really knew where I was on the internet. Lost on random pages with no algorithm or AI slop, and without ads being force-fed to me every five seconds.
The internet used to live in a room we could revisit anytime we wanted. Now we can't escape it.
I feel like everyone and everything is trying to brainwash me into buying things / staying distracted… do you feel it too? That’s why I decided to make my own little space on Neocities where I can stop overthinking. Nothing is wrong here. Everything is how I want it to be. The imperfections are celebrated and cared for.
I know most of us feel a certain pressure from being online all the time. I want to force you to take a step back to when we could separate online and offline in different rooms! Do you feel it already? The nostalgia of when the digital times were simpler? Or are you discovering an old, exciting world that you missed because you were born after 2004? Either way,
